Diary of a Village Hardware Store
Established in 1908 by John Millen, “Millen Hardware,” located in downtown Wilmette Illinois, has grown and prospered thru the years despite the challenges of Big Box retailers.
Much of this success can be attributed to the support of the Wilmette Community. And some of this success is due to the extensive list of services offered, (including recycling of fluorescent light bulbs, nickel cadmium and alkaline batteries, and latex paint), and some is due to our program of featuring “Unique Items” many purchased from small start-up companies.
Here you will discover information and resources that we hope you will find of interest. Please feel free to comment on any Diary Posting.

Weekend Painting Tip#1
Wood Bleach (Oxalic Acid) is an extremely useful product for removing stains from wood or to reduce its natural coloration. If the wood is stained or varnished, this must be removed with the appropriate solvent prior to using the wood bleach.
Use a rag soaked in paint thinner to check if the wood has been stained. If there is any trace of stain, it will need to be removed before bleaching.
